FAQ’s
Certificates
1. What is an academic certificate and how can I request mine?
As a general rule, an academic certificate serves to certify students’ academic records via a transcript.
By default, these transcripts do not detail students’ official average grades, Esade average grades or students’ positions in class rankings. Students should specifically ask for this information to appear in the document when requesting their certificates.
For more detailed text certifications, please see the variety of certificates available.
Any student with access to MyEsade has to request these certificates through the EOffice portal. Alumni should contact the Registrar's Office to request any of these services.
2. How long does it take to receive academic certificates?
The standard time required to receive certificates and certified copies is 4 working days as of the day after the request is presented. We also offer an express service for an additional cost of €10, though this ensures the document will be available in 48 hours.
The time required for certified copies of class syllabi is one week.
3. How much does an academic certificate cost?
The fees for issuing academic certificates are the ones established by the Catalan Government at any given time. You’ll find the currently applicable fees in the EOffice portal or you can contact the Academic Affairs for more information.
Certificates requested to obtain or renew Large Family IDs or Residence Permits, as well as certificates required to apply for grants are all free of charge.
Degree
1. When can I request my degree?
Once you’ve finished your degree and you meet all the program requirements, the option for you to request your degree will be activated in EOffice.
2. How can I pick up my degree (official) if I don’t live in Barcelona?
If you’re entitled to receive your official degree and you live in Spain (but not in the province of Barcelona), you can request to receive it via the Spanish Government Delegation Office (Delegación del Gobierno Español) closest to you. If you live outside of Spain, you can choose to have it sent to a Spanish consulate or embassy abroad. Please contact the Academic Affairs for the latter.
3. What is the difference between an official Master’s degree (Màster Oficial) and a URL-specific degree (Màster Propi)?
An official Master's degree is one that meets all the requirements established by the Spanish mandate on Official University Programs (Royal Decree 1393/2007 and its modification by Royal Decree 861/2010).
Official Master’s degrees have to undergo a validation, monitoring and accreditation process in keeping with European Higher Education Area (EHEA) criteria, and they are recognized academically by the Spanish Ministry of Education, accrediting their validity in Spain in accordance with the European model.
The objective of these official Master’s degrees is to provide specialized training in either a specific professional field or in research. They consist of 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits (ECTS=European Credit Transfer System), made up of core classes and electives, a Master’s thesis or project and, in some cases, an internship or other specific academic activities. In order to be admitted to an official Master's program, students have to hold an official university degree. Once successfully completed, official Master’s degrees, in turn, allow students to enroll in PhD programs (i.e., to present a PhD thesis).
An official Master's also awards points for those taking Spanish civil service exams.
A Master in Continuous Learning (Ramon Llull University-specific Master) also undergoes an evaluation and quality control process but internally (i.e., by the university itself).
These programs aim to provide students a more flexible and diversified education in a professional or academic area of specialization or to refresh their knowledge in keeping with current life-long learning demands. This type of Master also consists of 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits, based on the required workload for students. In order to enroll in a Master in Continuous Learning, students generally have to have an official degree. However, students can sometimes enroll in this type of program without an official degree, though, in this case, upon completing these programs, students receive a University Extension Diploma and not a Master’s degree. The Master in Continuous Learning does not allow students to enroll in PhD programs nor does it award points for Spanish civil service exams.
4. Can someone else pick up my diploma on my behalf?
Yes. In order for someone else to pick up your diploma for a private Esade or URL-specific degree, you need to prepare a written authorization letter signed by you, indicating the name and ID number of the person you want to collect your degree. (When picking up your degree, the person you authorize will have to present his/her original ID card with the same number indicated in your authorization).
However, if the diploma is for an official degree, a third party can only pick up your degree if you provide them a power of attorney (poderes notariales in Spanish).
5. How can I get a certified copy of my official degree?
Only public bodies (such as town/city halls – Ayuntamiento) and notary publics are authorized to make certified copies of official degrees.
6. I’d like to request my degree but I’m still doing my internship. Can I request it anyway?
You can only request your degree when you have finished your internship and the corresponding contract has finalized.
Grades
1. What grading system do you use?
As one of the steps towards the creation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the Spanish Ministry of Education established a new grading system during the 2005-2006 academic year (Royal Decree 1125/2003, 5th September, and published in the official gazette, BOE, on 09/18/2003). As of that moment, the following grading scale has applied in Spain: 0-4.9 (out of 10): Fail; 5.0-6.9: Pass; 7.0-8.9: Remarkable; and 9.0-10: Outstanding.
‘Distinctions’ or ‘Honors’ (Matrícula de Honor, MH) may (though not necessarily) be awarded to a limited number of students (5% of those enrolled in a class in a given academic year) and who have obtained a 9.0 or higher.
Spanish legal documentation
1. How can I request a Spanish Social Security number (NUSS)?
You can request your NUSS via Esade (up until the deadline established by your program; contact your Program Manager) or directly from a Social Security Administration Office. In order to request your NUSS, you also need to complete form number TA.1 and make a copy of your DNI (both sides) or, in the case of foreign residents, your TIE or NIE card (both sides).
