Key subjects to master management and international relations
Esade's Bachelor of Business Administration + Global Governance, Economics & Legal Order is a multidisciplinary degree. Being an expert in business management and global economics or politics requires mastering many varied subjects, from marketing and business finance to international relations and geopolitics. Starting in the first year, you will combine subjects from the Bachelor of Business Administration with subjects in economics, international law and global governance such as accounting, geopolitics, the United Nations Model and international protection of human rights, among others.
In addition, starting in the second year, you will take the subjects that correspond to the specialization track of your choice: Global Economics or Global Politics.

First year
Microeconomics
In this subject, you will acquire the knowledge and tools you need to analyse reality from an economic perspective. You will learn how to critically interpret the operation of markets and the economy while taking into account issues related to social responsibility.
Business Law
The overall aim of this subject is to equip you to make business decisions while taking into account legal limitations and conditioning factors. When you complete the subject, you will have basic knowledge that will allow you understand and assess the advice and actions of legal advisors and determine their soundness.
Applied Mathematics for Management
Mathematics are essential for analysing quantitative information. In this subject, you will learn how to create and interpret models that explain the economic, and financial reality of the business world, use mathematical language and concepts fluently, and apply deductive thinking rigorously.
Geopolitics
Countries use their geographical locations and resources to establish advantageous positions in their relationships with the rest of the world. You will learn these strategies and the methodology used to analyse geopolitics.
Model United Nations
International relations require constant dialogue to reach agreements among economic agents who have different points of view. To dialogue, negotiate, and reach agreement, it is necessary to develop a series of negotiation and teamwork skills; and acquire the knowledge to prepare and defend your position in debate; make proposals and negotiate. These skills are developed in the United Nations Model in a very practical approach.
Regional Economics and Integration
Since the signing of the Treaty of Rome gave birth to what is now the European Union, the EU has become a unique experiment in economic and social integration. You will learn what is the European Union, what is the role of the various EU institutions, what are the challenges ahead, and how community law works.
Institutions and Decision Making
This subject enables you to understand how institutions interact and how the different forms of decision-making give rise to social, political, and economic solutions that reveal significant differences.
Accounting and financial analysis II
This subject expands on the knowledge acquired in Accounting and Financial Analysis I. We will deal with situations of greater complexity, placing particular emphasis on product assessment and cost calculation. On completion of the subject, you will be able to understand any situation that modifies a company’s financial statements and know how to reflect the change in those statements.
Descriptive Statistics and Probability
In this subject, you will acquire theoretical and practical fundamentals that will enable you to approach decision-making correctly in the face of uncertainty. You will learn to use statistical reasoning, probability calculation, and modelling to guide you.
Statistical Inference and Data Analysis
In this subject, you’ll learn some of the theoretical and practical fundamentals that form the basis for making predictions and estimations and for testing hypotheses. You will learn how to transform information into knowledge, which will help you make decisions in the face of uncertainty.
Business Data Analytics
The decision-making process and the definition of strategy depend on considering the right information and the capacity to analyze it. In a world in which "data has become the new oil", this course will introduce students to the main tools and the use of software to analyze data to improve the decisions taken by managers.
Macroeconomics
This subject will expand on the knowledge acquired in Microeconomics: You will learn how to critically assess microeconomic approaches, decisions, and policies. Among other topics, we will cover macroeconomic variables, fiscal policy, the financial industry, recessions, and crises.
Tax Law
This subject will cover basic tax concepts that will help you understand why it is important for a company to follow a suitable fiscal policy. On completion of the subject, you will be prepared to study the Spanish tax system in greater detail.
Language I (Spanish)
Your curriculum will also include compulsory Spanish courses, ranging in level from beginner to advanced. Before beginning the BBA, students are required to take the Spanish Language Level Test set by Esade and/or with official accreditation recognized by Esade. You’ll start with the Language I course and learn to understand, speak, read and write basic Spanish that’s applicable both in business environments, and in daily life. On completion of this subject, your level of Spanish will reach level A2 (MCER system).
Second year
World Economic History
What does explain Globalization? How has changed our economic system in the last 200 years? This subject means looking back to better understand our future. Through the analysis of History, particularly the last two centuries, and adding an economic perspective to it students will better understand the current geopolitical and economic situation.
Game Theory and Strategy for Global Governance
When a company decides to apply a strategy, it must take into account competitors’ relies. Similarly, it is not possible to understand international relations without the analysis of strategic behaviour. This subject will give the student tools from Game Theory to be capable of analyze strategic interactions in Economics and International Relations.
Sociology
Companies operate in markets, and markets, in turn, are a part of increasingly interrelated societies. This subject aims to foster an awareness of the role that executives should play as citizens and their ability to contribute and transform society on the basis of socially responsible values.
Leadership & Organisational Behaviour
The subject aims to make you aware of the place and the effect that people and psychosocial processes have on organizations. In addition, we will work with explanatory models that will help you better understand the behaviour of individuals and work groups.
Statistical Inference and Data Analysis
In this subject, you’ll learn some of the theoretical and practical fundamentals that form the basis for making predictions and estimations and for testing hypotheses. You will learn how to transform information into knowledge, which will help you make decisions in the face of uncertainty.
Designing Operations Systems
In this subject, you will learn not only about the function of the operations area but also about how to harness this area to generate value for the company through innovation, production, logistics and quality.
International Conflict Management
What tools are used to manage international conflicts? In this subject, you will discover the main forms of conflict and the various resources, and mechanisms used to solve conflicts. You will study conflict theory, the various types of international conflicts, their causes, and the tools used to resolve them.
Digital Management of Information
This subject explores the numerous possibilities that new information technologies have opened up for companies. You will learn how to obtain data and design and implement information systems that can be used to create or support new business and organisational models.

Financial Analysis
The principles and techniques of accounting make it possible to determine: 1) a company’s assets and financial and economic situation; and 2) changes in the company’s assets, in the fundamental magnitudes of its balance sheet, and in its profitability indicators. In this subject, you will learn how this is done.
Industrial Organization
What can we expect when firms compete in an oligopolistic market? What is their behaviour? What are the most efficient regulatory options? How is changing our economic system the growth of platform economy. Industrial organization is the Economic analysis trying to answer the previous questions. You will learn how to perform an economic analysis of a particular industry.
Information Systems
Information systems facilitate innovation and flexibility in organizations. In this subject, you will learn to: 1) analyse an organizational environment from the perspective of information flows, and 2) use those flows to contribute to innovation processes within the company.
Financial Economics
Every economic activity requires sources of financing so knowing how financial markets operate is a decisive factor in your training. When you complete the subject, you will be familiar with the various financing instruments and know how to assess their suitability in any given case.
Marketing Fundamentals
In this subject, you will learn about fundamental concepts of marketing and acquire a solid foundation that will enable you to make good decisions as a marketing manager. You will acquire this knowledge by applying the learning-by-doing methodology, experiencing first-hand the design of a marketing planning process.
International Public Law: International Society
You can study this course at Esade or Sciences Po in Paris thanks to the Study Abroad programme. In an increasingly globalised world, national legal systems are not enough – globalisation implies the need for international public law systems. This subject will help you deepen your understanding of the legal relationships between countries.
Capstone I: Strategic consulting
Once our students have an introductory knowledge of the different areas of a company, marketing, finance, accounting or information systems is time to apply it to a real situation. Capstone I is a project in which students must tackle a challenge presented by a company, it will require analysis, creativity, critical thinking, communication skills and teamwork. Students will present their proposals to the company and will receive feedback from professionals in the field of management. Such interaction will help to get a first insight into the professional world.

Public Policies
In this subject, you’ll learn how to assess different public policy options in terms of their efficiency and their effects on income distribution, always through practical cases such as the analysis of different educational, health or housing market systems.
Organisation Theory
This subject will teach you to think in systemic terms: relating a company’s environment with its structure and the people who make it up. The objective is for you to be able to understand how the job market and people interrelate with the company and how organizations are structured.
Foundations of Operational Excellence
Building on the content of Design of Operational Systems, in this subject you will delve deeper into topics such as competing through innovation; developing new products, processes, and services; operational planning; and quality and environmental management.
European Union and external relations
The European Union is an important player in the global panorama, both for its defence of certain values and manner of understanding democracy – as well as for its economic power. This subject enables you to better understand how the EU works and its relations with third parties.
International Economy
To understand governments and Central Bank macroeconomic policies, to take investment decisions for a company operating worldwide is key to understand how the internal economic system works. This subject will complement your knowledge of Macroeconomics opening the pandora box of economic interactions in a globalized world.
Financial markets and valuation of financial products
This subject will introduce you in Financial Mathematics and the most common techniques applied in financial markets to value financial products such as bonds or equity. It is a must for anyone interested in Finance.
Competitive Strategy
This subject is divided into an intensive theoretical part, which will provide an overview of a company and key concepts in strategic decision-making, and a practical part comprising a simulation in which you will apply tools and concepts covered in class.
Ethics and Global Governance
This course introduces the ethical debate on the role of institutions and social models. You will analyse the ethical implications of the various models of governance.
Law and Economics
Should legal regulations consider the economic effects they produce? How are economic relations conditioned by regulatory frameworks? Are we establishing the appropriate regulation for new forms of economic activity such as the collaborative economy or large digital platforms? This course helps you understand the economic analysis of legislation – and so helps you answer the above questions.
Competing from Operations
Building on previous subjects, this subject will prepare you to deal with the most important issues faced by operations managers. We will cover topics such as designing supply chain programmes in collaboration with marketing, benchmarking, process-based management, etc.
Cybersecurity
This matter is essential in a world where digital platforms, big data, and social networks are changing the way we understand organizations, as well as our social and economic relations. Cybersecurity is essential but involves serious risks. Do we have adequate regulations in place?
Marketing Decisions
In this subject, which builds on Fundamentals of Marketing, you will learn about marketing strategies. To use an analogy from the world of chess, in Fundamentals of Marketing you learned how the various pieces move; in Marketing Decisions, you will learn about the most typical moves (checkmate, openings, etc.).
Financial Strategy
In this subject, you will analyse opportunities and threats in the creation of value through corporate finance. We will pay special attention to the dynamics between companies, business environments and financial markets that influence the chances of success.
International Security
You can study this course at Esade or The Fletcher School in Boston thanks to the Study Abroad programme. In either case, you will analyse the major risks for international security and the mechanisms for handling these risks.
Managing Information Systems
In this subject, you will learn to design an information-systems strategy that is aligned with the company’s organisational strategy. You will acquire the ability to identify and apply relevant aspects of information technology governance, with special emphasis on how these technologies affect every area of the company.
Capstone II: Strategic consulting
Once you are in your third year is the moment to learn about strategy, the definition and the challenge that implies making it real. The best way to learn strategy is learning by doing, This is why in this subject you will work with real companies to propose a strategy, to success you will work with your teammates, professors and professionals from the companies that ask us to help them with their strategy, you will need to apply your management skills and have an holistic view of how companies make decisions.
Language III (Spanish)
On completion of this subject, your level of Spanish will reach level B2 (MCER system). Over the course of the program, you’ll progress to Español 5, which focuses on becoming fluent and understanding the cultural context of the language.
Fourth Year
Marketing Trends
In this subject, which builds on Fundamentals of Marketing y Marketing Decisions, you will learn to create. To use an analogy from the world of chess, in Fundamentals of Marketing you learned how the various pieces move; in Marketing Decisions II, you learned about the most typical moves; and now, in Marketing Trends, you will learn to create your own moves, develop your own style, follow your own strategies, choose which tournaments to compete in, etc.
People Management
In this subject, you will gain a solid understanding of the criteria and processes involved in managing people in various organisational environments. We will cover tools and instruments for managing talent from a human standpoint that emphasises bonds and teamwork, while also taking social and corporate responsibility into account.
Corporate Strategy
In this subject, you will discuss general management decisions with real-life executives, learn about new strategic management tools and intensify your knowledge of the reality of business (both in Spain and internationally).
Socio-political Environment of Businesses
In this subject, you will learn to analyse the fundamental elements of the technological, economic, social, political, and cultural climate of organizations. You will gain an understanding of the impact that they have on the environment and acquire a global/local vision of reality. An awareness of these factors will enable you to generate a professional and civic commitment to society.
Geoeconomics
The economic activity of nations is conditioned by their geographical location and resources. In turn, countries use their economic potential to achieve political ends. During this course you will learn how countries use their economic potential to gain advantage in international politics.
Self-Determination and Minority Rights
This course discusses the regulation of self-determination and how it has been applied historically. You will analyse the tools and institutions that protect the rights of minorities, as well as the challenges posed by the protection of minorities.
Human Rights Protection
You will study human rights, their regulation and protection mechanisms, but also their limitations and possible alternatives in the future.
Advanced Macroeconomics
In the fourth year, you will finish the Global Economics track by delving into key topics of advanced macroeconomics: economic models of intertemporal choice, models of expectations and public policies, labour market models, introduction to macroeconomic dynamics, etc.
Research Seminar
This course gives you the tools needed to prepare your final degree project. These skills are also essential if you want to continue in the world of academic research.
Globalization: Economics and Politics
This subject closes your degree studies. You will analyse social reality from economic, legal, and political science viewpoints. The course involves a review of the current world situation and combines analysis from these disciplines.
English IV
English IV is designed as support for the student preparing its final degree project. One to one advice from one of our professors at the Language Department will help you to improve your academic writing skills and communication skills to present in front of the audience.
Final Degree Project
As a fourth-year student, you will work on an individual project due at the end of the year. The project will allow you to put the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program into practice. For the project, you may choose to develop a business plan, carry out an in-company business project related to your internship, or complete a Final Thesis.
International Exchange Program
During the fourth year, you will spend a semester abroad at one of the 80+ universities worldwide with which Esade has exchange agreements. In turn, students from those universities will spend their semester abroad at Esade, bringing an even more international vision to our classrooms.
