The Marikana massacre: Repair and corporate accountability 10 years on

Jordi Vives |
The Marikana massacre

It has been ten years since the Marikana massacre of August 16, 2012. With the collusion of the Lonmin mining company, 44 people were killed in what has been the worst episode of police violence since the end of Apartheid. Yet we are still nowhere near securing full reparation for the victims. The process of civil claims, prosecutions and support services has been piecemeal and often insensitive to the victims’ needs. Jordi Vives, an academic collaborator at the Esade Institute for Social Innovation, discusses the results of the research he conducted under the umbrella of the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) and the Institute for Business Ethics at the University of St. Gallen on the progress and gaps in the achievement of reparation and justice for the Marikana victims, with recommendations for a more comprehensive and integrated approach going forward.
