What is the Chair for Socially Responsible Digital Innovation?
Technology is today part of the social fabric in which we live and structures many of our daily habits. However, we live in digital environments that, due to their own design, can favor isolation, polarization and discomfort. The shadows of the virtual environment lay especially on the youngest: nine out of ten under 30 claim to have felt loneliness in the last twelve months, and a quarter experience this feeling frequently. With the arrival of generative artificial intelligence, this reality acquires a new dimension: for the first time, technology not only connects us with others, but can also take the place of a conversation, a listening or a form of company.
However, the digital and artificial intelligence future is not written. It is possible to build innovation without sacrificing humanity, but the paradigm must be changed. With this conviction, the Chair for Socially Responsible Digital Innovation (SoReDI) of Esade and Exea Impact was born, a space in which industry and society join forces to investigate, imagine and create in community a new way of relating to technology.

We believe in the power of collaboration to reinvent digital solutions oriented toward well-being and authentic social connections. We believe in an innovation that turns virtual spaces into a true tool at the service of the individual, benefiting society as a whole, and especially younger generations.
The digital future can be rewritten. We envision a technology in which platforms, rather than capturing attention, provide support. Where interactions, instead of fragmenting, strengthen community. Where innovation aligns with what defines us as humans: real bonds, a sense of belonging, and well-being. We want to create this digital future within an ecosystem that shares responsibility for the solution and to share it with the world.
De principios a práctica
Si bien gran parte del debate mundial se centra en principios éticos y riesgos, todavía existe una brecha crítica a la hora de comprender cómo estas ideas se traducen en comportamientos, sistemas y experiencias de usuario reales. Nuestro trabajo se centra en cerrar esa brecha. Estudiamos cómo se experimentan en la práctica los sistemas de IA mediante el diseño y la prueba de prototipos liderados por jóvenes, y observamos cómo estos sistemas influyen en sus decisiones, interacciones y sentido de agencia.
Una generación en el centro
Situamos a los jóvenes en el centro de esta labor, no como usuarios que deben ser protegidos, sino como participantes con capacidad de acción para dar forma al futuro de estos sistemas. Al abordar directamente la manera en que utilizan, interpretan, responden y se relacionan con la IA, aspiramos a revelar nuevas perspectivas que a menudo pasan desapercibidas en los enfoques técnicos, empresariales o centrados en las políticas.
Hacia un futuro diferente
Nuestro objetivo es contribuir a un futuro en el que los sistemas de IA no busquen optimizar la interacción a toda costa, sino que estén diseñados deliberadamente para fomentar la autonomía, las conexiones significativas y el bienestar relacional. Esto implica pasar de conversaciones reactivas sobre riesgos a diseñar y probar alternativas de manera activa, comprendiendo qué se necesitaría para que la IA fortalezca el tejido social en lugar de reemplazarlo.
