Research Project "UBERWORLD"
How UBER’s strategies are shaping the modern world: from internationalization challenges to driver nudging
Uber's disruptive approach to strategy revolves around leveraging big data, machine learning, algorithmic management, and lobbying efforts to influence market and non-market participants, including drivers, governments, and competitors. At the individual level, Uber uses behavioral strategies, such as nudging, to manage its disaggregated workforce, exploring how knowledge asymmetry and the lack of formal employment contracts impact driver satisfaction and control. At the firm level, Uber’s international expansion strategies are shaped by local network effects, with common ownership, particularly by Softbank, influencing competitive dynamics and market exits. The research examines Uber's decision to exit Southeast Asia after Softbank's investment. At the country level, the study focuses on how taxi incumbents challenge Uber through protests, lawsuits, and public demonstrations, with varied success in forcing Uber out of regulated markets. A dataset on anti-Uber protests in Europe is being expanded to analyze these dynamics more deeply.
